“Food Tourism: A New Destination for Travelers; Emphasis on the Development of Culinary Tourism in Iran”
The 5th Culinary Tourism Event was held alongside the International Tourism Exhibition, underscoring the growing importance of food as a central element in tourism.
According to rahbordbazar, quoting goodnewsagency, Anoushirvan Mohseni Bandpey, Deputy Minister of Tourism at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, highlighted Iran’s exceptional potential in traditional and local cuisine as a key factor for attracting tourists.
Food as a New Tourism Destination
Bandpey noted that with the growing variety of travel purposes globally, food tourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the tourism industry. He pointed out that in many countries, food is presented as a standalone cultural attraction, and Iran, with its diverse climate and cuisine, holds great potential in this area.
Focus on Food Safety for Attracting Tourists
The Deputy Minister emphasized the role of food quality in human health, stating that one of the reasons behind the rise of digestive and metabolic diseases is poor food quality. He added, “If food standards are not maintained, genetic susceptibility to diseases is heightened.” He further highlighted the importance of introducing healthy, local food as part of the responsibility for promoting food tourism.
Bandpey also pointed out an innovative example from Lorestan province, where a special type of sweet was introduced that does not raise blood sugar, emphasizing the health-focused approach to culinary tourism.
Local Food as a Foundation for Investment
The Deputy Minister invited the private sector to invest in this area, saying, “Food tourism, in addition to its cultural aspect, can also create job opportunities, empower local communities, and foster sustainable development.” He assured that the Tourism Department is ready to support local food producers and entrepreneurs in this field.
A Flavorful and Healthy Journey for Nowruz
Lastly, Bandpey remarked on the Nowruz (Persian New Year) travel season, expressing hopes that tourists would enjoy a journey filled with healthy and traditional foods, making their trip a memorable and healthy experience.
